Unless you have been hiding under a rock somewhere you will know that this summer Glasgow is the place to be if you are a music lover.
Radio 1’s Big Weekend will be visiting Glasgow to celebrate the city hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The BBC is the domestic broadcaster for Glasgow 2014 and, in addition to comprehensive sports coverage during The Games in July and August, the Corporation has also unveiled a wide-ranging package of on-air and off-air output and events throughout 2014.
From Saturday 10 May to Friday 16 May 2014, Radio 1 and BBC Learning will open the doors to Radio 1’s Academy, embarking on a special week of local engagement and outreach activity in Glasgow. Further details about Radio 1’s Academy, including the session plan and full line-up can be found here
On Saturday 17 May, Radio 1Xtra will host a one-night special event showcasing the best urban music at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow the week before Radio 1’s Big Weekend. The line-up includes MistaJam, Charlie Sloth and DJ Target from the 1Xtra family with DJ Fresh, Duke Dumont and Breach joining them for the event.
The Radio 1 Big Weekend, will kick-start celebrations on Friday 23 May with Radio 1’s Live from George Square. The event will see Radio 1 DJs Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and Danny Howard joined by Tiësto and Martin Garrix to host a massive party for over 14,000 music fans.
Joining Calvin Harris and headliners, Coldplay, to perform on the Main Stage on Saturday 24th of May are One Direction, Bastille, Pharrell, Jake Bugg, Lily Allen and Ed Sheeran.
Kings of Leon, The Vamps, John Newman, Rita Ora, The 1975, Tinie Tempah and Paolo Nutini will all perform on the Main Stage on Sunday 25th May, ahead of Katy Perry’s headline performance.
